Overnight wild camp and walk

My son had been on at me to take him camping so rather than visiting a campsite, I thought it was time to introduce him to wild camping.

We had previously been sort of wild camping with toilets, showers and fresh drinking water at Comrie Croft.

We headed for a local wood just outside the city and setup camp.

After a cup of tea brewed using water boiled on a pop can stove we gathered wood for a fire later in the evening, went to explore our surroundings and checked how well our camp was concealed. There are a large amount of dog walkers visit the wood but the site we had chosen was not very visable from the dog walking paths. Next it was time for our evening meal just before darkness started to descend. Immediately before it was dark we got the fire going, what a great campfire, it went for hours with some large logs glowing and throwing out a lot of heat. Sleeping was quite comfortable with a mat and sleeping bag inside an old tent inner for bug protection and under a tarp. It rained most of the night but we woke in the morning dry. After breakfast it was pack away time and preparing for the days walk.

We left the wood to the many dog walkers out in the rain. After a change of route deciding not to head over the hills in the wet we walked round the hills on the road. The roads were soon filled with people commuting to work and taking kids to school. The weather stayed miserable for most of the morning. When we stopped for an early lunch shortly after 11 o'clock the sun was shining and the dampness disappearing. Our lunch stop was on a small path beside a stream with a little waterfall. We each enjoyed a pot noodle and a cup of tea with some cakes. We headed off again for a few miles on a small country road with very little traffic, a change from the road we were on earlier. Eventually we had to take a turn off the road to a track heading over the hills. The sun was now beating down and made the climb hard going. This told us of the advantage of carrying lightweight gear, really must get some!!!

At the top of the hill we had some fantastic views and the good thing now was the rest of the walk is downhill. We arrived at the car park for getting picked up in time to have a drink before the drive back home.
